Process
The design process came from observing a palm tree leaf that could be seen from the studio window. The form of the unit was developed by observing the tapering and the way it cantilevers from the junction. The module thus formed emerges from a triangular base, extending in three directions at an angle of 120° from each other covering a span and a height of 5 meters each. To enhance structural stability a tensile cable is added to each unit extending from the top of the structure to the lowest point of the module. This module is then repeated radially to form a domical pavilion.
Learnings
From the review, we understood how the design became heavy. Even though our process began with exploring systems and details inspired from the leaf, we later realized how our focus shifted to the form of the pavilion and the system became an afterthought. The structure could become sleeker and the design for the unit could be resolved further by integrating the trusses into the member itself. was discussed. Going through Manjunath’s projects and listening to him speak about ‘growing a building, not building it’ we started understanding the need of resolving geometries by breaking through axes, staggering it; and the concept of weaving or bundling to break a monolithic form.
